resilience is a skill

advance despite adversity

In business, resilience is not just a nice-to-have; it's a got-to-have!

The list of challenges is long:

  • New technology shifts

  • Difficult clients

  • Poor communication

  • Prospects who ghost us

  • Stress, burnout, endless priorities....the list goes on!

Resilience is our ability to keep moving forward despite the frustrations and failures. We find a way forward, just like a river. The water might change direction when rocks or mud get in the way, but it always adapts and continues ahead.

Resilience is a skill, which means we can develop it. Much like any other skill, like bread-baking, or playing a musical instrument, we get better as we test new things and apply consistent effort.

Here, we dive into real-world practical and preventative tools that will reduce the stress and help us get to the next level.

A winding river through a forest

the story of vince vaughn

Vince Vaughn Swingers.jpg

In the early days of his career, Vince Vaughn estimates that he would land a job for every thousand auditions that he did. He was rejected from films like “There’s Something About Mary” and roles in TV shows like “Friends”.

And when he missed out, he would get pretty low. He would take some time and not work on anything productive. He explains it here:

“I would get down. I would take a week and then I would just not do anything. But then I started to realize that the week I took off was really two weeks. It was a week of not doing anything, and it was also a week of not getting better.”

One week off actually cost two weeks!

With that realization in mind, he understood that rejection is just part of the process. It's a rite of passage for any actor. So, after each rejection, he would get back on track quickly and re-focus on what he could do to improve for the next one.

That's resilience in action. Recognizing that the road ahead is going to be bumpy, but having the tools and mindset to go into it with enthusiasm and trust.

This is the dividing line between success and failure. It's our ability to bounce back quickly. Or rather, to bounce forward.
